Export Issue of Ware Potatoes to the Canary Islands

Following a report of a suspect Colorado Beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata), our experts have confirmed an isolated finding of larvae and a single male adult in Kent. We are responding swiftly through our eradication programme, involving ground surveillance to look for beetles and larvae at the outbreak site and surrounding area. In response to the isolated outbreak we are aware of an issue that the Spanish National Plant Protection Organisation intend to prohibit GB ware potatoes for export to the Canary Islands.

Defra are continuing to liaise with Spanish officials to seek clarification on this matter as consignments may be rejected upon import to the Canary Islands.
