UK Potato exports to the Canary Islands - soil tolerance update

Requirements for the export of potatoes to the Canary Islands – soil tolerance update

Following further discussions between MAPA (Spanish NPPO) and the Canary Islands authorities, MAPA confirmed on 28 September 2023 that the Canary Islands will accept a maximum content of soil of 1% by weight.

The requirement to eliminate any soil and harmful organisms is now therefore:

  • The potatoes must undergo a cleaning process by means of brushing and/or washing to completely eliminate any soil and harmful organisms. The maximum soil tolerance is 1.0%.

All other requirements remain as listed in the news item 'Updated 22 September 2023: Canary Island prohibition on exports of potatoes from the UK'.
