Reminder: Upcoming changes to legislation

Last updated on: 05 October 2026

In April 2026, the GB Plant Health Service introduced new legislation to strengthen biosecurity measures against the following pests and goods:

  • Bactrocera latifrons (the solanum fruit fly): requirements introduced for fruits of Solanum (i.e. tomatoes, aubergines) and fruits of Capsicum (i.e. peppers) originating from Taiwan and Israel
  • Ralstonia pseudosolanacearum (a soil-borne bacterium): requirements introduced for rhizomes of Zingiber officinale (i.e. ginger) originating from all countries other than EU Member States, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

These measures will come into force on 15 October 2026. If you have any comments or questions, please email planthealth@defra.gov.uk.
