About the UK Plant Health Information Portal

Help keep our plants healthy, don’t bring plants back from your holidays

poster showing a red suit case with the words don't risk it on it. The text says Don't risk bringing plant pests and disease in to the UK when travelling aboard. Please leave, plants, seeds, flowers, fruit and vegetables behind
  • Healthy plants and trees are vital for our survival and provide us with many benefits, but our plant health is under threat from pests and diseases and climate change. Our plants provide an annual value to our society of £15.7billion
  • Like people, plants can become sick from pests and diseases, and we need your help to protect them. Our plants and trees are increasingly vulnerable to pests and disease, due to the globalisation of trade and travel, human activity, and climate change.
  • Protecting the UK from plants pests and diseases is far more cost effective than dealing with plant health outbreaks. Government and the plant sector are leading the way and taking actions to address these threats.
  • BUT all have an important role to play in keeping our plants healthy. There are many actions you can take to be a responsible plant health citizen and protect the UKs plants and trees from pest and diseases.
  • During this summer holiday please be mindful of enjoying plants and trees where you visit, but  ‘Don’t risk it!’ Don’t bring plant material (plants, trees, fruit and seeds) into the UK from trips abroad. These might be carrying harmful pests and diseases, that if brought back to the UK maybe introduced and established here, leading to costly and damaging outbreaks.

If you need to import plants you can find out about the requirements here: Bringing plants and wood into Great Britain: Overview - GOV.UK

Fruit and vegetables for consumption also have their own rules: Bringing food into Great Britain: Fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds - GOV.UK

Don't risk it

Report a pest or disease

There are many pests and diseases that can seriously damage crops and plants in the UK. Assessing and understanding these threats is essential to informing the actions needed to protect plant health set out in Protecting Plant Health - A Plant Biosecurity Strategy for Great Britain.

As the Strategy makes clear, tackling threats to plant health is not just a matter for government; success is dependent on partnership working between all those with a role to play. To this end the Portal is a shared resource providing information about plant pests and diseases, including the assessments of risk undertaken by government and the data underpinning those assessments, with links to other sites of interest, including non-government sites, as well as information on the plant health controls and services provided by government.
